Every Tuesday of June: 6,13,20, and 27 at Starline Social Club
Level 1 : Beginning Balboa
Balboa is a swing dance developed in Southern California in the 1920's and became popular in the 1930's, and 1940's It is a fun dance well known for its elegance, subtlety, and is great for fast music. We will introduce you to the dance, from basics to paddle turns to lollies. Learn a different part of the swing family tree!
Level 2: Connect With Me! (Lindy)
Cultivate a dynamic range of connection in your dancing that elevates simple steps to the height of musical expression! In this class, Lori and Douglas will show you how to make every dance a fun dance full of creativity and spirit.
Requirements: students must be familiar with the pass-by, underarm turn, and swingout.
Swing Series Instructors
Lori Taniguchi & Doug Mathews
Lori and Doug are well-known in the South Bay dance scene for years of experience teaching and organizing at Wednesday Night Hop. Doug brings a love of movement and communication that is nerdy in the best way, and Lori brings a sense of joy in movement that will remind you why you love this dance. Lori and Doug spend countless days a year traveling in the national dance scene focusing on dance pedagogy, competing, and enjoying social dancing.
Elective Class on Mondays
Every Monday of June from 7-8pm: 5,12,19,and 26 at the Lake Merritt Dance Center.
Learn the famous Tranky Doo
The Tranky Doo is an historic jazz line dance danced all over the world as the Shim Sham or the Big Apple are. When the dancers hear the well-known song, they all start dancing together as seen on this video!
Getting good at solo jazz dancing is critical for partner dancing. As they say “How can you dance with others if you can’t dance by yourself?!” Get comfortable with rhythms, jazz vocabulary, and body movement all by learning the Tranky Doo! And who better to teach it than our very own Kevin and Veronica!
Where and when?
This class will be located at the Lake Merritt Dance Center on Monday nights from 7-8pm.
- $55 for the June Series pre-sale if you buy tickets by Tuesday May 30th. Includes access to Stompy Jones on Monday Night after the class and Tuesdays at the Breakaway. After the 30th, the price goes up to $65!
- $20 Drop-In, includes Stompy Jones Live Band but does not include access to the Breakaway on Tuesdays.
Tranky Doo Instructors
Veronica Ramirez & Kevin Hwang
Kevin Hwang and Veronica Ramirez have been active members of the UC Berkeley and East Bay lindy hop communities for a combined 8 years as teachers, DJs, and organizers. They became dance partners when they helped found the UC Berkeley performance team Sproul Stompers in 2013, and have danced and taught together ever since.
