Swing Dance Series

Level 1 : Swingin' in 6-counts!

Six-count swing is a simple and easy way to immediately get yourself out on the dance floor for a swingin' good time! Learn some fun 6-count moves - turns, spins, and traveling across the dance floor - for a dynamic dance between you, your partner, and the music.

Level 2: "Breakaway" from 6 and 8 Count Patterns

By listening to the music and your partner, learn to improvise new movements to add to your basic 6 and 8 count repertoire. Discover the art of "2-count swing," so that you can take the moves you already know and learn to lead/follow countless new variations. Each week, Sam and Calvin will hone your understanding of how to draw inspiration for improv from the music and your partner. By the end of this class, you will have learned when and how these variations can fit into each of your dances.

Swing Series Instructors

Samantha Nguyen & Calvin Lu

Sam and Calvin fell in love with swing dancing at UC Berkeley's Lindy on Sproul and SwingCal, both becoming active members of the swing community by teaching, mentoring, and DJing. Raised in Cal's ambidancetrous community, you'll often find them both leading and following on the social dance floor. Their dancing focuses on playful partnership and lighthearted silliness. Coming from performances with the Sproul Stompers and recent competition experience, Sam and Calvin are excited to share their enthusiasm at the Breakaway.

Elective Class on Mondays

Every Monday from 7-8pm at the Lake Merritt Dance Center.. On October 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th.

Learn the famous Big Apple

We’re holding an elective class series in October to teach the Big Apple! If you've learned the Shim Sham or the Tranky Doo, this is the line dance you need to learn to bring it to the next level. Class will be on Mondays and includes admission to all the Breakaway dances and the Monday night dance at Lake Merritt.

The Big Apple is now as familiar as the Shim Sham or the Tranky Doo. These dances happen naturally on the social dance floor when the dancers hear the well-known song.

The Big Apple is a super fun, high-energy group participation circle dance that uses well-known jazz steps. It includes dance moves with names like "Spank the Baby," "Truckin," "Hallelujahs," and "Rusty Dusty," to name a few. Check it out in the movie Keep Punching performed by the Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in 1939.

Special Pricing Details

  • $65 for the October Elective class pre-sale if you buy tickets by Tuesday September 26th. Includes all the social dance night on Mondays and Tuesdays + 2 live band nights in October: live band night at The Breakaway and at Lake Merritt Dance Center. After the 26th, the price goes up to $75!

Big Apple Instructor

Rachel Phillips

Rachel started dancing in Berkeley. She loves to go social dancing, to travel and dance, to DJ, and to choreograph. Rachel’s favorite part of swing dancing is that there’s always something new to explore! Recently, she’s discovered a love for solo jazz movement and rhythms. She also loves to talk about swing music!
