You’ll get a solid understanding of the basic Charleston and some of its variations, as well as the mechanics of leading/following it. You'll have fun while learning some stand-out moves!

Level 3: Hep to the Tuck

Swing Series Instructors

Level 1

Breakaway teachers – Olivia Ortiz & Bryan Lopez

Olivia Ortiz & Bryan Lopez

Olivia: With no previous dance experience aside from casual hip hop classes and a dream to become a b-girl, Olivia started swing dancing at SwingCal, UC Berkeley's student-run swing dance course. She's followed for four years and, inspired by her friends and a want to delve deeper in her understanding of swing, started leading less than a year ago. A recent grad, during her time at Cal, Olivia choreographed and performed with The [M]ovement and Sproul Stompers, taught at Lindy on Sproul, and facilitated SwingCal for 2+ years. As a teacher she's very excited about making partnered dances as comfy as possible and the importance of "listening" within a partnership. Always a fan of trying out new, impossible ideas, she hopes to one day lead performance teams.

Bryan started dancing in the Bay in 2014 and had his first class at UC Berkeley's Lindy on Sproul. Since then, he has never stopped! His dancing focuses on improvisation with his partners and the music to create a unique dance with each person. At the end of the day, he hopes to inspire and remind people that dancing is about having fun and sharing that feeling with others.

Level 2

Breakaway teachers - Hanah Yendler & Julian Enis

Hanah Yendler & Julian Enis

Hanah first discovered lindy hop in a world history class in 6th grade, but had to wait until college to actually take classes.  Now she can take as many classes as she wants and has been dancing for over 8 years, refining her movement and performing with multiple groups in the Bay Area.  Hanah loves solo jazz, and partnered dancing, and New Orleans jazz, and doing Susie Qs (just not on the left foot), and the ridiculous names of lindy dance moves (Susie Q...really?). In general, Hanah just loves everything that is the utter effervescent joy that is lindy hop, and especially loves teaching and sharing that joy with others.  In her spare time, Hanah teaches code, stuffs her face with pastries, and makes a mean 1920's cocktail.

Fun fact: Hanah has danced lindy in over 9 countries and favorites include South Africa, Israel, and Korea.

Julian learned to Lindy Hop in college at UC Davis and ever since has been dancing with a smile on his face. He enjoys social dancing wherever there's swing music, and has performed and competed with groups from the Bay Area locally and nationally. He always brings his dance shoes when he travels (even on the rare occasion that it's not dance related) and enjoys making connections with people that share a love for the art of Lindy Hop. When he's not dancing he can be found swimming in the bay, baking bread and pastries, brewing beer, or nerding out about food and wine.

level 3

Breakaway teachers – Anna Papitto & Bryan Lopez

Anna Papitto & Bryan Lopez

Anna dreamed of dancing since her early childhood but never had access to dance classes. In her last semester of college, she stumbled upon Lindy on Sproul after hearing how addictive it was from a couple friends. Since then people have started wondering where she spends all her free time - and she is always ready to invite them to try Lindy out! Anna loves Lindy's ability to connect so many individuals and let them express the joy and emotions in historic and beautiful swing music. She hopes that the joy of Lindy will become more accessible to people from more walks of life, and is proud that the Breakaway has been making steps in that direction right here in the East Bay!

FAST DANCE: INTRO TO BAL-SWING

Breakaway teachers – Rachel Phillips & Sam Nguyen

Rachel Phillips & Sam Nguyen

Rachel started dancing in Berkeley in 2015. She was walking through Sproul Plaza, heard the infectious music, and knew she wanted to learn the Lindy Hop! With a background in tap dancing, her favorite part about the dance is the rhythm, and she loves to play with the footwork to create new rhythms in her social dancing. When she’s not dancing, Rachel enjoys playing board games, learning to ride horses, and reading up on the fascinating history of jazz music and dance. Or she's at the DJ booth.

Sam fell in love with swing dancing at UC Berkeley's Lindy on Sproul and SwingCal, becoming an active member of the swing community by teaching, mentoring, and DJing. Raised in Cal's ambidancetrous community, you'll often find Sam both leading and following on the social dance floor. Her dancing focuses on playful partnership and lighthearted silliness. Coming from performances with the Sproul Stompers and recent competition experience, Sam is excited to share her enthusiasm at the Breakaway.
