Swing Dance Series
Level 1 : 8-Count Swing
This class will cover 8-count footwork and basics of Lindy Hop - like the swing out! You’ll learn about partnered connection, how to hear the beats of the music, and the joy of swing dancing. Suitable for beginners with no experience in swing dancing or for those looking to solidify their understandings of 8-count fundamentals.
Level 2: “It Don’t Mean A Thing”
What makes things swing? How do we dance in a way that embodies the playfulness and creativity of jazz? In this class we learn to recognize and appreciate our invisible third partner (music) and use our understanding to enrich our dances with fellow humans.
Level 3: Mix and Match Variations
This month we’re going to show you how to take what’s tried and true, and turn it into something new! As dancers, we’re always looking to invent new shapes, rhythms, and feelings to enhance our dancing. In this class, we’ll focus on improving your ability to experiment with moves and variations you already know to create something that may feel the same, but look entirely different (or vice versa!). Mixing and matching pieces of our existing vocabulary is one of the best ways to grow your dancing organically. You can expect to challenge yourself both creatively and technically in this class, all at your own pace!
Beginning Balboa (ELEF)
Doug will be continuing with ELEF (everyone leads, everyone follows) Balboa in July with the addition of Lori Taniguchi! Lori is a strong leader and follower in Balboa and never fails to have a compelling and comical way to break down the dance. We will be focusing on pure bal, the chest to chest connected part of the dance. Over the month we'll work on basics, ad libs, footwork textures, pivot turns and more. This will be approachable for new students but include a lot of new material for continuing students, hope to see you there!
Swing Series Instructors
Level 1 & 3
Rachel Phillips & Kendall Lui
Rachel started dancing in Berkeley in 2015. She was walking through Sproul Plaza, heard the infectious music, and knew she wanted to learn the Lindy Hop! With a background in tap dancing, her favorite part about the dance is the rhythm, and she loves to play with the footwork to create new rhythms in her social dancing. When she’s not dancing, Rachel enjoys playing board games, learning to ride horses, and reading up on the fascinating history of jazz music and dance. Or she's at the DJ booth.
Kendall is a San Francisco native who loves coming to the Breakaway. He spent most of his dance career in Davis, CA where he taught Lindy Hop and organized weekly dances. He is a technical dancer and loves exploring partnership through connection. His favorite part about swing dancing is social dancing - you'll hardly see him taking a break all night!
Level 2 & Balboa
Lori Taniguchi & Douglas Mathews
Lori Taniguchi has taught swing dancers of the San Francisco Bay Area since 2013. In addition to over a decade of experience in the community, there is nothing she enjoys more than using her unique, infectious enthusiasm to inspire students. She can get anyone up and moving to the music in no time.
Douglas Mathews has been dancing swing for over 10 years, and fell in love with Balboa as soon as he was introduced. The subtle rhythms and connection of pure bal, and the turning stretchy feeling of bal swing became his focus in dancing. Since then he has competed across the country winning awards at ABW, Cal Bal, ILHC, Camp Hollywood and others. He has been teaching Lindy and Balboa in the SF Bay Area since 2013, and loves to share the joy and connection of the bal dances with anyone who will listen.
