Swing Dance Series
Level 1 : Sultans of Six-count Swing
Six-count lindy hop is a great way to build your dancing foundation, especially if you are already familiar with eight-count! Catherine and Anna will start from ground zero and have everyone on the floor dancing confidently from week one. Come learn to dance or even learn another role!
Level 2: Swing-out Variations
Learn how to add some pizzazz to your swing outs! Footwork variations, fancy turns, swivels (for everyone), and even forward swing outs - we are going to do it all. This class does not necessarily build on top of itself, except for class reviews, so feel free to drop in when you can. We also be doing a bit of workshopping swing outs, as it’s the Lindy Hop fundamental.
Elective: Solo Jazz Fundamentals
Solo jazz is a dance onto itself - come learn different building blocks to continue to evolve your solo jazz. We will being doing exercises that can be found in more ‘classic’ dance classes - such as exercises across the floor, technique drills, and vocabulary. But don’t be scared - this class is for everyone! Total beginners at solo jazz are welcome as well.
Swing Series Instructors
Catherine Hwang & Anna Papitto
Catherine started swing dancing at UC Berkeley in 2011 and helped found the Sproul Stompers, a UC Berkeley lindy hop performance group. She loves to share the joy of lindy hop with the world, whether it be through teaching, DJing, or just plain social dancing!
Anna dreamed of dancing since her early childhood but never had access to dance classes. In her last semester of college, she stumbled upon Lindy on Sproul after hearing how addictive it was from a couple friends. Since then people have started wondering where she spends all her free time - and she is always ready to invite them to try Lindy out! Anna loves Lindy's ability to connect so many individuals and let them express the joy and emotions in historic and beautiful swing music. She hopes that the joy of Lindy will become more accessible to people from more walks of life, and is proud that the Breakaway has been making steps in that direction right here in the East Bay!
Hanah Yendler & Julian Enis
(Hanah Yendler will also be teaching Level 3!)
Hanah first discovered lindy hop in a world history class in 6th grade, but had to wait until college to actually take classes. Now she can take as many classes as she wants and has been dancing for over 8 years, refining her movement and performing with multiple groups in the Bay Area. Hanah loves solo jazz, and partnered dancing, and New Orleans jazz, and doing Susie Qs (just not on the left foot), and the ridiculous names of lindy dance moves (Susie Q...really?). In general, Hanah just loves everything that is the utter effervescent joy that is lindy hop, and especially loves teaching and sharing that joy with others. In her spare time, Hanah teaches code, stuffs her face with pastries, and makes a mean 1920's cocktail. Fun fact: Hanah has danced lindy in over 9 countries and favorites include South Africa, Israel, and Korea.
Julian learned to Lindy Hop in college at UC Davis and ever since has been dancing with a smile on his face. He enjoys social dancing wherever there's swing music, and has performed and competed with groups from the Bay Area locally and nationally. He always brings his dance shoes when he travels (even on the rare occasion that it's not dance related) and enjoys making connections with people that share a love for the art of Lindy Hop. When he's not dancing he can be found swimming in the bay, baking bread and pastries, brewing beer, or nerding out about food and wine.
