Swing Dance Series
Level 1 : Charleston
Kick it up a notch with the Charleston! This class will cover the Charleston - a dance which first became popular in the 1920s and which you'll often see on the Swing Dance floor. You’ll get a solid understanding of the basic Charleston and some of its variations, as well as the mechanics of leading/following it. You'll have fun while learning some stand-out moves! | Time: 8-9pm
Level 2: Balboa 2
Our shuffling journey continues! If you took our Level 1 introductory series, you know that this beautiful, tight, and intricate sweetheart dance originated in Southern California in the 1930's. This is a great dance for twirly skirts, slick leather shoes, and a sense of class. We will review the previous month's material and add on with even more rotations, redirects, and fun tempos. | Time: 7-8pm
Level 3: Reacting to Your Partner
The elective class for October is drop-in friendly all month!
If you've ever seen two dancers who really in sync, you might have thought, "Wow, do they have a psychic connection?" In this class, we will try to discover some of the secrets to this psychic connection. We will explore techniques like visual leading and following - as well as how to match your partner - so that you can not only match their pulse but also the vibe they're throwin' down. |
Swing Series Instructors
Level 1 & Level 2
Lori Taniguchi & Doug Mathews
Lori and Doug are well-known in the South Bay dance scene for years of experience teaching and organizing at Wednesday Night Hop. Doug brings a love of movement and communication that is nerdy in the best way, and Lori brings a sense of joy in movement that will remind you why you love this dance. Lori and Doug spend countless days a year traveling in the national dance scene focusing on dance pedagogy, competing, and enjoying social dancing.
Sam Nguyen & Calvin Lu
Sam and Calvin fell in love with swing dancing at UC Berkeley's Lindy on Sproul and SwingCal, both becoming active members of the swing community by teaching, mentoring, and DJing. Raised in Cal's ambidancetrous community, you'll often find them both leading and following on the social dance floor. Their dancing focuses on playful partnership and lighthearted silliness. Coming from performances with the Sproul Stompers and recent competition experience, Sam and Calvin are excited to share their enthusiasm at the Breakaway.
