Swing Dance Series
Level 1 : 8-Count Swing
(Week 1: Featuring Sam & Calvin)
Come learn to dance Lindy Hop! Veronica and Isaac will take you through the basics of social dancing and get you moving your body to a beat—with other people! No experience or partner needed!
Level 2: Fancify Your Basics
Each individual legend of Lindy Hop had a slightly different way of doing their basic moves that put their signature on the dance. We will give you some tools to change and develop your fundamental moves and stylings into your own unique style for both followers and leaders.
Level 3: Sixes and Eights
(Week 1: Featuring Sam & Calvin)
Most of the moves you learn in level one and level two are either six counts OR eight counts, with entire classes spent on one or the other. In this class, we'll teach you how to move between six and eight naturally and musically, how to play with six-count and eight-count rhythms and shapes, and how to use these tools to bring more rhythmic freedom to your dancing.
Rachel and Doug will be showing you transitions from pure bal to bal swing and all the magic that can happen there. We will work on come around transitions, pure bal vocabulary and exploring the toss out. This class will be switching role optional, so you can come and train a specific role, or switch! At least one balboa class experience recommended (but talk to Doug if you're new and want to take it).
Swing Series Instructors
Level 1 & 3
Veronica Ramirez & Isaac Garfinkle
Veronica Ramirez started swing dancing as a sophomore at Cal in 2012, after going to a SwingCal intro session on a whim. Since then, they've served as the executive director of Lindy on Sproul, performed in teams at Cal and in San Francisco, and taught at The Breakaway, Cat's Corner, Wednesday Night Hop and the 9:20 Special. They love traveling to dance events to learn from the greats, quizzing their dance partner about pop culture, and making dumb Lindy Hop jokes.
Isaac Garfinkle is a Lindy Hop and Jazz dancer based in San Francisco. He has won contests at events including Midwest Lindy Fest and the Collegiate Jitterbug Championships. He hopes to get every student excited about making rhythms and sharing ideas during every dance!
Level 2 & Balboa
Rachel Phillips & Douglas Mathews
Rachel started dancing in Berkeley in 2015. She was walking through Sproul Plaza, heard the infectious music, and knew she wanted to learn the Lindy Hop! With a background in tap dancing, her favorite part about the dance is the rhythm, and she loves to play with the footwork to create new rhythms in her social dancing. When she’s not dancing, Rachel enjoys playing board games, learning to ride horses, and reading up on the fascinating history of jazz music and dance. Or she's at the DJ booth.
Douglas has been dancing swing for over 10 years, and fell in love with Balboa as soon as he was introduced. The subtle rhythms and connection of pure bal, and the turning stretchy feeling of bal swing became his focus in dancing. Since then he has competed across the country winning awards at ABW, Cal Bal, ILHC, Camp Hollywood and others. He has been teaching Lindy and Balboa in the SF Bay Area since 2013, and loves to share the joy and connection of the bal dances with anyone who will listen.
