Beginner : Ready, Set, SWINGOUT
The Swingout!! THE move that defines so much of Lindy Hop. It's a move you'll be refining for the rest of your lindy hop journey, but for now we'll just start by learning the basics of it, as well as a variety of other classic lindy hop moves to put into your dancing. The swingout is critical for Level 2 and this class is well worth taking multiple times if you feel like you haven't got it down pat after just one month with it. No partner and no experience necessary.
Beginner Teachers: Saining Li & Aini Hall
Intermediate: Dancing Fast
When the tempo gets fast, it's time to get sweaty! Dancing lindy hop to higher tempo music is all about efficiency, managing momentum, and putting in the work to move yourself across the floor. And it's a ton of fun, especially to live music! This class will teach you about technique and tools that you can use to not just survive a fast song, but own it!
Intermediate Teachers: Steven Bach & Alice Chang
Intermediate Elective: Training Sessions: Turns 201
In this Intermediate+ elective, we’ll focus on leading and following common types of turns in lindy hop, both in terms of shape (e.g. tuck turns, barrel turns, turns in place, turns down a line) and speed/rotation (e.g. turns that take 2 counts or 4 counts, double turns, and triple-step turns). We’ll give you lots of tips and tricks to make turns feel less dizzying, clearer, more comfortable, and fun! This class will be a little tougher than your average intermediate class. We recommend it for students who want a challenge and are trying to make the jump one day to Advanced Topics!
You must have completed at least 6 months of Intermediate before taking this class.
Elective Topics Teacher: Max Ramirez & Helen Garfinkle
Advanced Topics: Slides
This series is 2 weeks long: November 6th, and 13th.
LBN and Practice Session on Nov. 20th included!
Requires prior approval for advanced topics see here.
Sliding is super fun, if your shoes have a little bit of slip to them! And once you learn a few ways to slide solo, you'll find that you can put them in a ton of different places in your partner dancing! In this short 2 week series, Calvin and Lanceton will teach you how to practice your slides, making them efficient and smooth, and a few places to start experimenting with them on the social floor. Not sure if your shoes are slippery enough? Try them out at the Breakaway beforehand, and we'll also give you tips for how to manage sliding on floors of different slippinesses.
Advanced Topics Teachers: Calvin Lu & Lanceton D'Souza
Practice sESSION
Intermediate/Advanced Practice Session is held on the last Thursday of each month at 7-8pm, right before the dance.
These practices are meant for dancers who are very comfortable with Intermediate content, have danced and taken classes regularly for at least a year, and are willing to be more collaborative and self-directed than a typical class setting. Ideas will be given for inspiration, but you are encouraged to bring your own ideas to work on. Coming with a dance partner is not required but is allowed and recommended. Expect to workshop moves and ideas with other dancers, give and receive constructive feedback, and build connections in the Lindy Hop community!
