6s & 8s: Shag Musicality!

Now that you've conquered the 6 count basic and some moves, how do we turn those into a good collegiate shag dance? Using new moves and varied footwork we'll start building phrases to make our shag dancing look and feel musical. On top of variations on the 6 count basic we will expand our shag horizons to include breaks and the 8 count shag basic.

Participants should be comfortable with the 6 count shag basic and with using it for basic moves and turns. They should also be familiar with open, closed, and side by side connections. Recommended to have taken at least 2 month long shag classes or workshops. Feel free to reach out with questions!

Workshop Teachers: Edward Paddock

After a childhood of dance, Edward (he/them) discovered Lindy Hop in college at UC Davis and fell in love with the dance and the community. After moving to Oakland in 2018, they branched out into Solo Jazz and Collegiate Shag, as well as continuing their training in Rhythm Tap. They are passionate about rhythm, technique, and making dance a fun and welcoming experience for dancers of all levels! Edward's recent dance achievements include choreographing the winning Solo Jazz team for Camp Hollywood 2022 and buying too many new pairs of tap shoes.

Alex Phelps (they/them) began their dance journey with Irish Dance, which they did for nine years as a child and teen, competing at the national and international level. In 2017, Alex started learning Lindy Hop at Cat’s Corner, and quickly became passionate about the dance and the many modes of self-expression and creative collaboration that flowed from it. Today, Alex also dances Vernacular Jazz and Collegiate Shag, most notably winning first place in the Amateur Showcase competition at Camp Hollywood 2023 and second place in the Amateur Collegiate Shag Strictly division at Hot Rhythm Holiday 2024.
