Descriptions of Levels:

Advanced:

Designed for higher-level dancers and more seasoned competitors, but still aimed at people who are not our most decorated dancers. If you have placed at or or won contests at any level above newcomer (amateur is not newcomer) at a national/international level (like Camp Hollywood, ILHC or Lindyfest), consider sitting this contest out. If you're wondering if you're eligible, chat with Max at the Breakaway or email him at max.va.ramirez@gmail.com.

Newcomer:

Designed for people who have never competed before! This is only open to dancers who are not eligible for Advanced Topics or Audition-level classes at any Bay Area venue, and have never taken an audition-only or invitational track at a workshop weekend. If you don't regularly take classes, check out the track descriptors for Swingin' at the Savoy. If you'd place yourself in the Orange track, you are not eligible for Newcomer. If you're wondering if you're eligible, chat with Max at the Breakaway or email him at max.va.ramirez@gmail.com.

FAQs:

If I won [insert literally any contest here], do I have to do Advanced?

Yes.

If I won [amateur contest at stormy weather or some other such thing], can i still compete in advanced?

Yeah, sure.

I wouldn't be eligible in newcomer as my primary role, can I compete in my secondary role?

We would prefer that you do not! This is largely because we want to prioritize the experience of people with little to no contest experience. Please talk to an organizer, it will ultimately be at our discretion.

Can I compete in both weeks with different roles?

No, only because finals are jam style, and on the off chance you make finals in both, it would add a level of complication we cannot accommodate.
